I'm the Preschool Director for our Wednesday night activities... which means I help the ABC Club teachers for 3, 4, and 5 year olds. Actually, there may be a few 6 year olds in the group, too. I'm not sure when the "cut-off" date is, but our church starts "grouping" children according to their birthdate once they reach age two.

For example... the current "4 year old class" has children born in October 2002 and in August 2003. At age four, the "gap" is not as noticeable as it is at age two.

A child born in October 2004 (who will soon be three) is usually more developed in his/her fine motor skills (such as drawing, writing, cutting with scissors, etc.) and gross motor skills (such as jumping, skipping, hopping, etc.) as well as in his/her social skills (such as communicating, "separation anxiety," and even toilet training) than a child born in August 2005 (who recently turned two).
